What to expect when you first use Clarify, our new salicylic acid toner

If you’re using a salicylic acid toner for the first time, you’ll go through some initial skin reactions before it shows you results. It will help loosen up dead skin that clog pores, resulting in a smoother complexion for your problem skin!
Clarify is a leave-on exfoliating solution powered by 2% salicylic acid and blended with natural mango and papaya fruit extracts. It soothes, hydrates, and calms the skin while effectively targeting congestion, blocked pores, and oiliness.
We made Clarify slightly oily in texture and loaded it with really nourishing and hydrating ingredients to work alongside 2% salicylic acid. It thus penetrate problem skin deeply and gets to work on skin cell renewal – without causing redness, irritation, or burning commonly associated with other salicylic acid toners.
But, if you’re new to salicylic acid toners, you can expect an initial 4-6 week ‘purging’ period when you first start using Clarify. The term ‘skin purging’ refers to a reaction to an active ingredient that increases skin cell turnover rate. The skin, then starts shedding dead skin cells faster than normal. Before new, healthy cells can cycle to the surface, other stuff has to rise to the top first, like the excess sebum, flakes, and buildup that clog pores (in other words, the makings of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads). This is what’s called ‘skin purging’. While purging and flaking sound scary (and they certainly aren’t fun!), they’re common side effects that happen with most first-time users. If you stick with using a good salicylic acid toner long enough, though, these reactions will subside and your skin will literally turn a corner and become smooth, clear, and renewed.

More about purging
Purging is a natural process that occurs when your skin’s surface is exfoliated. During this time, you may experience more visible pores, oiliness and breakouts (aka the purging phase). This can last for several weeks to months depending on how sensitive your skin is and how often you use the product but in general, dermatologists agree that the purging phase with salicylic acid should be over in 4-6 weeks.
You might need to review other products in your routine
If you find your skin isn’t getting along with salicylic acid, it’s time to review (or ditch) a few products from your routine.
Check that your moisturiser isn’t too thick or heavy for your skin type. If it is, try switching to something lighter and more hydrating instead. You want to choose products that are non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), so keep an eye out for ingredients like squalane and hyaluronic acid.
Also, when you first start with salicylic acid, eliminate all other exfoliating acids. It’s fine to use both, but not at the same time. Likewise salicylic acid and retinol shouldn’t be used in the same routine.
Dryness and flaking
As with any new product, it’s normal to experience dryness and flaking when you first use a salicylic acid toner. This is especially true if you’ve been using products that contain alcohol or drying ingredients that can strip your skin of its natural moisture barrier. Although this reaction may seem alarming, it’s nothing to worry about, and it will likely fade within a few days as your skin adjusts to the new regimen.
Stay calm! Moisturize and hydrate your skin on a regular basis. Don’t be surprised if you see some dry skin in the morning—especially if you’re sleeping on fabrics that can irritate sensitive facial skin—or after washing your face.

Your skin will be more sensitive to the elements
When you first start using a salicylic acid toner, your skin will be more sensitive to the elements. It’s important to take extra care when exposing your skin to sunlight and harsh chemicals, in order to prevent damage and irritation.
Wear sunscreen! Even if it’s not sunny outside, UV rays can still harm your skin. Make sure that any sunscreen you wear has at least an SPF of 30 or higher.Add a protective spritz like Balance to your routine and use it throughout the day to calm the skin and protect against radical damage.
Why 2% BHA solution?
At 2% salicylic acid, Clarify is potent enough to exfoliate deep within pores but gentle enough to avoid damage to the skin barrier. It effectively unclogs blocked pores and removes excess sebum to reveal clearer, smoother, more radiant skin without causing irritation.
Clarify deeply penetrates problem skin and encourages skin cell renewal to reveal a softer and brighter complexion.
If you’re using a salicylic acid toner for the first time, you’ll go through some initial skin reactions before it shows you results.
This is part of the reason why salicylic acid is so effective for acne. It’s a gentle but powerful exfoliator, and when you apply it to your face, it will help loosen up dead skin cells that clog pores.
The end result? A smoother complexion that doesn’t break out as much.
However, as we explained above, purging can happen when you first use Clarify – If this happens with your new product, don’t worry: just give it 4-6 weeks and watch the transformation as your skin adjusts to the new product.
