Sustainability

By blending nourishing natural extracts with high performance active ingredients, Pestle & Mortar delivers simple solutions for beautiful skin. We know that you want to live a clean beauty life without the planet paying the price. We do too. That’s why our brand has been cruelty-free and vegan since the start with over 3000 potentially harmful ingredients formally banned from our products.

Sustainability is a journey that we have to take together. As a young brand, we’re not yet perfect but we’re obsessed with making continuous improvement with every decision we make. And we will keep you in the loop so that you can make intentional decisions to live the kind of beauty lifestyle you want.

Where We Are

  • Our customers can choose to have any full-size or midi product shipped with or without outer packaging.
  • By only working with GMP-approved factories, we ensure that all of our  ingredients are ethically and responsibly sourced.
  • All of our products and ingredients are certified vegan and cruelty-free.
  • All of our products are made in the EU, with 80% made locally in Ireland.
  • We only use eco-friendly, water-based soy ink on our packaging
  • All of our cylinders are made from 100% recycled paper.
  • In 2019 we removed plastic shrink-wrap from all of our outer packaging.
  • From 2019 onwards, all new products have 100% lamination- and efoam-free fully recyclable outer packaging.
  • We repurpose shipping boxes and use 100% paper-based shipping materials – including paper tape, no bubble wrap, no air cushions – just 100% recycled and 100% recyclable paper packaging.
  • We encourage & educate our customers to dispose of their skincare containers correctly using the Empties Bag.
  • A third of our products are packaged in glass bottles.

Where We’re going

  • 100% recyclable outer packaging for all products by 2022.
  • We’re actively working with evolving technology to redesign our plastic packaging so that we use more environmentally friendly solutions (fully recyclable components and/or coming from renewable sources).
  • We’re swapping plastic containers for glass bottles wherever possible. Our first product redesign will be introduced in the first half of the year.
  • We’re working on refillable options for our highest volume products.

INGREDIENTS

At Pestle & Mortar we know we don’t have time to wait for perfect. We have to act right now rather than pay the price at a later date. As we move along our journey towards optimal sustainability, we’ll keep you fully updated across our social channels and our website. And of course, we’re here to answer any questions you may have.

Our best-selling product is Pure Hyaluronic Serum and so we started by making sure that its main ingredient (and our highest volume ingredient) is both Ecocert and Cosmos approved. All Pestle & Mortar ingredients are ethically sourced and quality guaranteed. Production takes place in GMP (good manufacturing practice) approved factories and it’s 80% local to Ireland which minimises our carbon footprint.

Packaging

Over the last few years, we’ve made important changes to the packaging that we use for shipping. We replaced plastic shipping materials with 100% recycled paper and boxes. To wrap it all up  before your skincare is delivered to your doorstep, the box is sealed with paper-based tape.

We’ve always repurposed shipping boxes for online orders. We believe it’s more special to get your delivery in a box that’s had a useful life before it got to you. So we ditched single-use boxes that look pretty before you throw them away.

We know our customers are the type of people who choose to avoid additional waste where possible even if it’s at the expense of their own unboxing experience.

All full-size and midi Pestle & Mortar products are now available to purchase with or without outer packaging. We’re introducing our customers to a box-free option in our quest for zero-waste

Founder & mum-of-five Sonia Deasy believes that brands need to approach sustainability from a position of genuine care for the environment:

“What constitutes real improvement must be carefully considered. There is no point in brands jumping on the sustainability bandwagon just to satisfy trends in customer buying behaviour. Some believe 100% organic products are most sustainable. Others say that some crops can only be grown organically thousands of air-miles away. Many people look for recycled plastic while some prefer infinitely recyclable (but heavier to freight) glass. Brands need to approach sustainability from a position of genuine care for the environment and work smart to get the balance right.”

THE FUTURE

Getting to the point where we are fully sustainable is a process. To move forward, we’re adding  layers to how we think about design. We’re asking how we can make it better and we’re asking this question at every step of the design process. If we can reimagine it, we can make it happen.

Right now, our  existing product packaging is being actively redesigned component by component. We’re excited about what’s in the pipeline and we know you will be too.
